New Digs | First Quarter 2017

I've been slow to bring home records to start the year. I'd like to think I've started to become a bit more selective, but the truth is I've just been too busy to look. I HAVE been clicking 45's off the ol' ebay watch list, so stay tuned as I'm sure I'll be sharing some of them soon. Here's a quick look at what has caught my eye. Some limited edition new releases and a handful of quality used sounds have found a home with me.

Happy hunting!

Dungen - Haxan (Smalltown Supersound, 2016)

Temptation Rise - Temptation Rise (Anthron International)

Toe Fat - Toe Fat (Rare Earth, 1970)

Barbara Jean English - Barbara Jean English (Alithia, 1973)

The xx - I See You (Young Turks, 2017) <-- Limited Edition Box Set

Whitney - Light Upon the Lake (Secretly Canadian, 2016)

El Gran Combo - De Punta A Punta (EGC Records, 1973)

Albino Gorilla - Detroit-1984 (Kama Sutra, 1970)

Frank Ocean - Blond (XL Recordings, 2016) <-- Limited Edition 2lp

Run the Jewels - Run the Jewels 3 (Run The Jewels Inc, 2017) Limited Edition 4lp

New Digs | Record Store Day 2013

I got up early to hit up the neighborhood spot on Record Store Day in hopes I could secure some of the sought after gems that were scheduled to hit the bins. I hadn't really done the research to know what was coming out, but as in years past, I was sure something would be released that I could get into. I was pretty disappointed when the line to even get in the door was wrapped around the block. Waiting in line is not my forte, and I decided to crash the spot later in the day when all the nerds had already fled home to upload their haul on ebay. Around 3pm I tried again, and was able to walk right in, without a line! The highlight of my trip (other than the records) was when I spotted a 3-4 year old girl in complete awe of a copy of The Misfits' Legacy of Brutality on vinyl. She couldn't take her eyes off the cover... I hope her parents bought it for her!

The next day, I thought I'd swing over to another local spot to see if they had some of what I may have missed out on the day before. I was able to find a couple additional pieces that were released especially for the occasion. I copped a bunch of other non-RSD releases on both trips, and will share them as well in the upcoming weeks.

The xx - Jamie xx Edits (Young Turks, 2013)

Still haven't cracked the seal on this, but anxious to hear how Jamie xx reworks a couple of the standout cuts from their last full-length.

Tame Impala - Tame Impala Ep (Modular, 2013)

I've been jamming to my mp3's of this for a minute, so it's nice to finally score a tangible copy to pass on to my grandchildren. I'll be doing a more robust post on this Ep in the next coming days... stay tuned!

The Roots - Things Fall Apart (MCA, 2013 Re-issue)

One of my personal favorite albums finally gets the vinyl re-treatment with this special 2Lp pressing.

Cut Copy - Bright Like Neon Love (Modular, 2013)

This is another personal favorite from the last few years. I can honestly say that I probably would have normally held back on pulling the trigger and making this purchase, but I was genuinely caught up in the hype of the day and felt like I needed to support my independent shop in a big way!

Frank Ocean - Nostalgia,ULTRA. (FrankUltra, 2013)

What?!?!?! I had no idea this even existed, but after rocking those mp3's for so long, I couldn't resist scooping up this official enough looking bootleg.

CSC Funk Band - Funkincence (Electric Cowbell, 2013)

My one RSD gamble. I knew nothing about this band, but like their incense interpolation on the cover. The music is pretty funky and I feel somewhat 'special' to land one since only 250 copies were pressed! Woo-hoo!

TR-909 Double Flexidisc Record/ Book (Get On Down, 2013) <--- not pictured

This is a cool promotional sampler for the upcoming book Beatbox: A Drum Machine Obsession. I'll be doing an additional post profiling this sweet piece in the future as well.

Stay tuned and happy digging!

New Digs | End of 2012 (Part 2 of 5)

These records are from a couple trips to Everybody's Records. They always have the goodness and have been very kind to me over the years.

Bernie Worrell - All The Woo In The World (Arista, 1978)

Tony Joe White - Black and White (Monument, 1969)

I really dig this. I don't have too many country records, but this one will definitely have a home in the collection.

Fuzzy Haskins - Radio Active (Westbound, 1978)

Dayton - S/T (United Artists, 1980)

Chi-Lites - Half A Love (Brunswick, 1975)

I was a little bummed by how dirty this record sounds because it looks great! A clean copy would sound so beautiful too! I'll have to mint up one day...

Frank Ocean - Channel Orange 2LP (?, 2012)

I couldn't wait for the official Def Jam release of the Frank Ocean album (what's the deal anyway?) so I copped this quality German bootleg.

Sylvia - Pillow Talk (Vibration, 1973)

Gotta love this gal's hustle. If there isn't already, there should be a book about her.

The Wolfgang Press - Big Sex (4AD, 1987)

Freddie McCoy - Funk Drops (Prestige, 1966)

Vibing off the vibes. I've slowed down buying jazz records, but every now and then like to grab one to add to the fold. Nice quality album.

John Fred and his Playboy Band - Agnes English (Paula, 1967)

X - More Fun In The New World (Elektra, 1983)

I'm just now getting into this band. I totally slept on them!

Ohio Players - Mr. Mean (Mercury, 1977)

Finally a clean copy. It seems like anytime I've considered this record it has an unsightly gouge on one of the sides. One of these days I'm gonna do an Ohio Players Gatefold post...
