The Quails - "Over The Hump / I Thought" (Harvey, 1963)

This is the kind of record I like to stumble across! This 45 by Celeveland, OH based The Quails (also known as the Five Quails) was released on the Harvey Records, a small Detroit based label ran by Harvey Fuqua and Gwen Gordy Fuqua. When Harvey Fuqua was snatched up by Motown, The Quails followed him, but never really got their chance to shine. Both sides of this 45 are stellar and encourage me to keep my fingers dusty while scoping out more releases from the Quails and Harvey Records.

The Fabulous Counts - "Jan Jan / Girl From Kenya" (Moira, 1968)

When I copped this 45 by The Fabulous Counts it immediately made it's way to my premium crate. I'm always down for solid instrumental funk, and both sides, "Jan Jan" and "Girl From Kenya", more than fit the bill. You'll probably recognize "Jan Jan" as it nearly charted upon release and has since gone on to become part of the instrumental funk canon. The Fabulous Counts were a Detroit based soul/funk group, and after swapping original members, became known as The Counts. The Counts continued to release a handful of records throughout the 1970's and their records seem to be a little easier to track down. I'll be sure to keep my eyes peeled for other Moira releases.

The Superlatives - "I Don't Know How To Say (I Love You)"

This is a fantastic soul burner (the flip-side "Lonely In A Crowd" is great too) from the Superlatives. It's astounding just how many one-off soul groups from Detroit were pressed up, and never quite made it despite the quality of their releases.
