Dip Dip Dive | December 7th Recap

I wasn't sure what to expect after moving Dip Dip Dive from the final Friday to the second Friday of each month. Would people still show up? Would the crowd be any different? Well, as I should have expected, ANY Friday is a good excuse to get down! Despite a couple blown fuses, which resulted in a rude stoppage in music and an awkward silence, the night was a huge success! The dance floor was mostly packed and requests poured in as I did my best to accomodate... within reason of course. There was a group of dudes that were relentless with their demands for me to play "Back That Azz Up"... I politely relayed the story of when we first started DDD and the bar staff kindly requested that we never play that song as they had grown beyond sick of the Juvenile classic. A man of my word, I stood my ground despite the duder barrage. Here is a sampling of the rest of the playlist. See you next go around!

D.I.T.T. | Doin' The Mud Foot - Biz Markie Promotional Cassette Single (1990)

Ahhhhh, tapes! About 10 years ago I made the mistake of getting rid of a majority of my tape collection. Little did I know that I would one day have a new forum to revisit and share some of the sounds formatted to cassette. I still have most of my pause and stop tape collection, a handful of some of my first cassette purchases, and a few random cassingles, mixes, and oddities that somehow missed out on the big purge. This Biz Markie cassingle was something I copped within the last few years during one of my thrift store jaunts. I was pretty sure I was unfamiliar with both of these songs as I couldn't recall them from any of his albums and hoped this collaboration with Converse was made of exclusive content. Both sides are great examples of the "off the dome" quality of the Diabolacal B-I-Z. Side A features the cut "Off the Top Of My Head" which finds the Biz catchin wreck like only he can over a slammin' drum break driven beat. Side B contains "Non Stop Rockin" which boosts the always flip worthy Grover Washington loop and a features guest spot from Biz's Cold Chillin' homie Diamond Shell. Now if only I could find one of those Biz Markie/ Converse T-shirts...

New Digs | Early December 2012

Last year I made it a personal goal to listen to enough Motorhead to earn permission to rock a Motorhead t-shirt. I just can't be caught faking the funk! I've been slow to make the goal happen, but now that I've scored their first three lp's, I'm headed in the right direction. Also, pretty happy to find a nice clean copy of the first Clash record.

Dip Dip Dive | December 7th

After a strong three year run, Dip Dip Dive is moving from the last Friday of the month, to the second Friday of each month. I very much welcome the change and hope we can continue enough momentum to keep the night cranking for another three years!

Join myself and the fine folks at The Stand for another unforgettable night of dance, drink and delight. We promise to play all the booty jams, booty breaks, and booty bass your ass can handle.

...And Everything I Do Is Funky Like Lee Dorsey | Live Performance (1967)

We are spoiled. Video of today's artists and performers can be found all over YouTube, TV, and film. While I'm no stranger to the music of Lee Dorsey, I don't think I've ever encountered live footage of him getting down. I've only been able to imagine in my mind his persona, style, and swag when enjoying his records. To see his performance visually realized in front of me seems almost surreal... Like I'm seeing something I'm not supposed to see. In these videos Lee Dorsey performs his popular favorites "Get Out Of My Life, Woman" and "Ride Your Pony" while he holds the stage down like a boss! I should have known better since "everything he does has gotta be funky". This footage was filmed in Germany and is part of a larger series of performances from a Sam & Dave tour in 1967. Props to Aristotlekh for the upload!
