Bakersfield Boogie Boys

I am a pretty big Devo fan. Not quite on the level as some of the Devo-obsesso's that tattoo themselves with potatoes (spuds) or portraits of Booji Boy, but enough of a follower to have tracked down most of their LP's and splurged on an actual energy dome. When I came across this Bakersfield Boogie Boys record, I was reminded of the perplexed childish awe I experienced as a youth while gazing at my dad's Devo records. Amazingly, the BBB's sound actually honors their kindered visual. The Bakersfield Boogie Boys put out a self titled EP in 1980 that borrows heavily from Devo's formula of quizzical imagery, sparse rhythmic sounds, and oddly reinterpreted covers of popular oldies. Three of the EP's four songs are covers, leaving a lone original song "Flying Tigers". The band was a bit of a mystery at the time, as critics actually thought the band was Devo in disguise! Additionally, the Bakersfield Boogie Boys' take on The Rolling Stones' “Get Off my Cloud” and The Beach Boys' “I Get Around” fulfill my appetite for new wave quirk and leave me jones-ing for just a little bit more. If anyone has any further insight to the band's story or any knowledge of other material, please let me know!
